I Need Your Help!
2010 July 18
I’ve got a new project in the works for PhoebeTV, and I need your input! If you don’t cook, or if you don’t cook as much as you would like, why not?
I’m looking for something a little more in-depth than “I don’t have time” or “I’m really tired when I get home from work.” Here’s some examples of reasons I’ve gotten from my friends, after no small amount of badgering:
- “I don’t know how to cut vegetables, so a recipe that would take you minutes in prep would take me an hour.”
- “I don’t know how to make healthy food taste good, so I end up buying a boring salad for lunch every day.”
- “Whenever I buy fresh produce, I don’t end up using it all before it goes bad so I don’t bother.”
- “I hate following recipes, and I get sick of making the same three things I know how to make over and over.”
So tell me, what keeps YOU from cooking for yourself? Leave me a comment, or use my handy contact form. I’ll solve your kitchen dilemma AND give you an on-air shout-out! Double win!

My biggest problem: I eat meat, and I often forget to defrost it in advance.
Also, I am a member of a CSA, which is a mixed blessing for creativity. On one hand, I have a lot more veges in my fridge than I usually do, and many things I wouldn’t normally eat (radishes, turnips). On the other hand, the collection of things I do have lend themselves to a garlic/ginger stir fry, which I have over and over and it gets boring.
Thanks Reiko! Those are both really great kitchen challenges. Stay tuned!
Did I mention how much I loved the spinach soup you had up on the blog awhile ago? I made it with swiss chard though…
I’m so glad you liked it!
I do cook for myself and I like what I cook, but I rarely cook by recipes. I use what I have, cook whatever comes out, and it’s usually good. The problem is that I’m usually not too creative when shopping, so I buy the same things over and over, and eat the same stuff over and over.
There’s a lot of stuff I like that ‘ve never even tried cooking. And of course, when I’m shopping, I don’t remember that I’ve meant to try to make it some day. Like brussel sprouts or sweet potatoes.
My favorite thing is heading over to Reiko’s and going to town with her surplus of veges.
I want shopping lists that include ingredients that are easy to cook and good for mixing and matching!
Thanks Majo! I’m totally going to use that.
